One of the three research facilities that make up the Special Unit for Biomedical Research and Education (BRESU) of the Department of Medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the Clinical Research Unit of Papageorgiou Hospital. BRESU's primary goals are to support and advance interdisciplinary biomedical research and education, particularly in the fields of medicine, biology, genetics, pharmacology, and biomedical informatics. Phase I clinical investigations, bioequivalence studies, as well as pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology studies will all be conducted for the first time in Greece through the Clinical Research Unit, which is a pioneering and creative structure.

Infrastructure & Equipment

The Clinical Research Unit is located on the 4th floor of Papageorgiou Hospital, covering an area of 500 sq.m., with 18 beds exclusively for the conduct of clinical studies, a laboratory, pharmacy, dispensary and a recreation area for volunteers, supporting their accommodation should this be required by the clinical protocol. Staffed by 40 highly qualified medical and nursing personnel certified in Advanced Life Support (ALS), Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
The Unit has recently received ISO 9001:2015 certification in the field of clinical trial design and conduct, and is a member of the European research network VACCELERATE to accelerate Phase I and II clinical trials of the covid-19 vaccine.
The Clinical Research Unit houses and collaborates with the pharmacokinetics and toxicology laboratory located in the same area at Papageorgiou Hospital.

Laboratory

of the Clinical Research Unit

The Laboratory of the Clinical Research Unit supports the Clinical Research Unit of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in terms of clinical phase I drug investigations and bioequivalence studies.
Additionally, the aforementioned laboratory operates as a clinical toxicology lab for the immediate laboratory treatment of all pharmaceutical poisonings and the laboratory investigation of the causes of comas of unknown etiology (presence or absence of sedatives), throughout the Region of Central Macedonia and beyond, daily on a 24-hour basis and throughout the year.
In order to fulfill its objective, the Laboratory's scientific team works on research projects with laboratories and clinics across Greece. Young scientists are trained in clinical toxicology by the Laboratory at the same time.
